Sometimes in our reading of the Word, in our reading of the ministry, or in our hearing the ministry of the Word, we come across portions where we say “Oh I’ve read this before, heard this before”, and on the one hand, could we could say we know this already. Well…. The Lord does not keep writing “new commandments”. Often what He speaks, we could say we’ve “had from the beginning”. But…..at the same time, the “commandments” He is writing are new, because there is the TRUE LIGHT. We need to have this kind of prayer. “Lord, let none of what I’m hearing or reading be old to me. Make it something new. Cause the true light to shine!” (Ministry Meeting, Msg. 3).
The intrinsic view of the Body of Christ in Ephesians 2 is the one new man (Eph. 2:15). When Christ died on the cross, He TERMINATED everything of the old creation, that belonged to our fallen nature, including race, culture, ordinances, and the law.
When we hear the words “one new man” we may think that this means all races, nationalities, dispositions, etc, can be one. But actually, the term “one new man” implies CHRIST being ONE. He is all and in all. There’s no such thing as race, nationality, etc, in the one new man. They are literally non-existent.
Because Christ terminated all of it on the cross! Our boast should never be in that so many people from different races can come together and get along and be one. Our boast is in Christ, because He is all the members and in all the members! Hallelujah!
A spiritual man is a man whose mind, which is the leading part of his soul, is attached to and even set on his spirit.
We need to be saved from trying to carry out an individualist work for the Lord. “If my hand is separated from my arm, it is separated not only from the arm but from the whole body as well. You only need to be separated from one member, and you are separated from the whole Body [of Christ]. We are all members of the Body, and we need to coordinate with one another” – Witness Lee, The Glorious Vision and the Way of the Cross, pg. 19-20.
According to the New Testament, we have both an old man (Rom. 6:6) and a new man (2 Cor. 5:17). When we were saved, our old man was crucified! Paul said in Romans 6:6 “Knowing this, that our old man has been crucified”. We need to know this! It’s a fact.
When we lived according to our old man, the soul is our person. But when we were saved, our spirit became our new person, and now the soul has become the organ to serve our spirit. When we talk about denying the soul-life, we are not referring to denying the functions of the soul.
What is implied is that the PERSON of your soul needs to be denied, and that your soul would be in full subjection to your spirit. We still need the functions of our emotion, mind and will. If you didn’t have emotions, how could you love someone? If you didn’t have a will, how could you choose to do anything?
Although we do have a new man, our spirit, and our old HAS BEEN CRUCIFIED, in our experience we still often are living according to the old man, that is, according to the person of the soul. We need to learn to SPEAK to our old man, and to the functions of our soul. “Mind! You stop what you’re doing. You’re not the one in control here. You’re in full subjection to my spirit, to my new man!”
This was new to me…..that I need to learn to SPEAK to the parts of my soul. This may sound silly, but I’ve been practicing this and it has been SO HELPFUL. Sometimes we have to be factual, and not overly subjective, because our experience of Christ rests on the facts, not on our subjectivity.
Not only are we terminated, we and the faculties of our soul have been uplifted and enriched in resurrection! (Rom. 6:5-6). We have a new heart! A new spirit! The faculties of our soul have been uplifted!
Next time you feel “oh I just cannot love this person”. Actually, that’s not true. You have a new heart! Declare it! “Lord, You’ve given me a new heart, and it’s with this new heart that I can love ANY kind of person”. I encourage you to practice this.. Speak the facts! Your feelings are a lie.
